IFFI Indian Panorama filmmakers slam Doordarshan for not showing their films any more

“We don’t know why Doordarshan stopped showing Indian Panorama films?” This is the constant refrain of the films directors who have their films in the Indian Panorama sections (Feature & Non-Feature) of the 43rd IFFI. The director of AKASHATHINTE NIRAM Dr. Biju was particularly critical of the way these films are treated by various Government agencies. He feels there is no use of being selected in the Indian Panorama section if your film does not get to be seen by people beyond the film festival circuit.

He felt that Doordarshan was a great outlet for such films, which also paid for their telecast and helped the independent art house filmmakers who find it tough to survive in the absence of a state-funding mechanism in the country. He wondered why DD, the national state owned network, stopped showing these films.

Dnyanesh Moghe the director DIGANT and Sunanda Bhat, the director of NINGAL ARANAYE KANDO, the two other Panorama entries, wholeheartedly endorsed Dr. Biju’s views and appealed to the authorities to take effective steps to ensure the survival of independent art house cinema.
