IFFI played catalyst in growth of Mumbai, Kolkata, Kerala, and Pune film fests – Shankar Mohan, Director, IFFI

Shankar Mohan, the director of the 43rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), was addressing the media along with the Managing Director of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) Manoj Srivastav during the mid-festival press conference.

He said that IFFI played a major role in spawning the film festival culture in India through its various initiatives including setting benchmarks of technical excellence by employing the services of companies like Barco, Real Image, and Dolby for the first time.

He also referred to the earlier years of IFFI when it did not have a permanent venue and was held in different Indian cities and thus was a precursor to many Indian festivals that are being held back-to-back now. He added that the Directorate of Film Festival (DFF) and IFFI would happily continue to extend all possible support and to act as a resource to Mumbai, Kolkata, Kerala, Pune, and all other Indian film festivals.

On being asked if it is time for IFFI to move away from Goa to another state capital, after having established Panjim city as a film festival venue, he said such suggestion was being made for the first time. He avoided making further comment on the issue.

There has been a buzz in the media room here that the ESG and IFFI directorate have been at loggerheads over various issues regarding the organization of IFFI and the Government of Goa would like to organize the festival on its own.
