OPINION

Gadkari’s remark on Swami Vivekananda was stupid, Mahesh Jethmalani’s reaction is gratuitous, and media morons are playing it up to help Congress

Nitin Gadkari didn’t realize that his comparison was odd and stupid. He was making a brilliant analysis in his view. However, he certainly did not make those remarks to insult Swami Vivekananda. A RSS worker will hang himself before that.

For the ignoramuses, Swami Vivekananda is the foremost icon of RSS only after Bharat Mata and Bhagva Dhwaj. Its founder Hedgevar and ideologue Golwalkar, known as Guruji, come only after Swami Ji in the RSS iconology.

The fact is except the Ramakrishna Mission and Math, and the RSS, none really much cared to carry forward Swami Vivekananda’s legacy in this country post-Independence. All RSS ideologues from Keshav Baliram Hedgevar to Golwalkar, Eknath Ranade, Deendayal Upadhyay and Sudarshan were deeply inspired by Swami Vivekananda and were guided by his ideas. Deendayal Upadhyay’s ‘Ekatm Manavvad’ (Unity of Mankind) is also derived from Swami Ji’s ideas and the cultural traditions of India.

The ideological foundations of RSS are based on Swami Ji’s life and message. The RSS mantra of ‘nation-building through man-making’ is derived from Swami Vivekananda’s writings and speeches. His portrait along with that of Bharat Mata and his complete works are permanent fixtures in a RSS worker’s living room. In complete contrast the living room of a Congress worker will have portraits of the Sonia Parivar these days with no bookshelves. The Communists of course have an altar in their houses, covered in red, with the busts of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao installed on top, and bookshelves filled with copies of The Capital and the Communist Manifesto and biographies of their iconic leaders.

I find the brouhaha over Gadkari’s remark ludicrous and mischievous. Since when has the Congress party started caring for Swami Vivekananda’s legacy and name?  They are filing cases in the Gujarat courts as if Gadkari has insulted their father. I am also surprised that the BJP has not come out strongly against those who are blatantly trying to run Gadkari down.

The reactions of the Jethmalanis are strange. I don’t understand why the BJP re-inducted Ram Jethmalani in the party.  He was a complete failure as a Law Minister and of late has been losing all important cases. As an eminent jurist, he should have spoken against the anti-Gujarat judgments of the Supreme Court and the motivated pronouncements and actions of its judges. He did not do that and gave a clean chit to a tainted judge like Arijit Pasayat. What purpose does he serve in the party?

And why is Mahesh Jethmalani upset over Gadkari’s remarks? He should first disown his father who acts as Dawood’s spokesperson and advocate, paid or unpaid, whatever the reality may be. He goes on telling the world that Dawood is not a traitor and he was not involved in the Mumbai Bomb Blasts. Jethmalani obviously does all this for cheap publicity. Surprisingly, the BJP provides him legitimacy and keeps reviving his political career that had ended after he was thrashed and paraded almost naked by the late Chandrshekhar’s followers.

Ram Jethmalani does not have an iota of gratitude in him. He even damaged the electoral prospects of the BJP in 2004 by openly talking about Vajpayee’s dementia and senility. He did it to a person who made him the Law Minister in his first government.  As the Law Minister for a brief period, Jethmalani only demonstrated his incompetence.

How could the BJP forget that? The Jethmalanis* have not won a single election and have never served the cause of the country or the party.  They are self-servers. And I can tell you with great certainty that Mahesh Jethmalani, who was so peeved by Gadkari’s comments, has not even read Swami Vivekananda. It was so evident in the way he took Swami Ji’s name. He called him ‘Swami Vievekananda Ji’. I have never heard an acolyte of the great Hindoo Monk of India referring to him thus.

Let me correct myself. Ram Jethmalani did win two Lok Sabha terms.
